Asian North Americans and the Challenge of Medical Missions

Asian Americans Christians health care workers have shown a high level of interest in medical missions as evidenced by a disproportionately large percentage of Asian Americans who attend missions conferences such as Urbana or Louisville GMHC. Yet relatively few Asian Americans serve as long-term medical missionaries at this time. This session will explore potential barriers to Asian American Christian health care workers serving as long term medical missionaries and discuss potential solutions.

Objectives

1. Review the characteristics of Asian American culture and Asian American sense of identity in general
2. Explore how the Asian American culture and Asian American sense of identity may pose barriers to long-term medical missionary service
3. Explore how the Asian American culture and Asian American sense of identity can be leveraged to encourage long-term medical missionary service
