Fruitful domestic and international medical missions overlap in multiple ways. Both require cross-cultural skills, a willingness to work with limited resources, courage in the face of potentially dangerous situations, and possible disapproval from friends and family. Each is excellent preparation for the other. Many international workers spend furlough time working in American Christian health centers--and vice-versa.

Outcomes: to see North Koreans as people made in the image of God (Gen 1:27); to be peacemakers (Mt 5:9); to love North Koreans as Jesus would (Mt 5:44). To see that healthcare is a strategic way of engaging with the people of DPRK.

In early 2025 the Launch Survey was sent to everyone on medicalmissions.com. The results identified the most significant factors that help and hinder those who may aspire to become goers for 1+ years up to long-term. The results include the most positive factors leading to international service, which hindrances most get in the way of reaching the field, and generational differences that can affect mobilization and leading new healthcare missionaries. The survey tabulated responses from two groups: those who have launched into full-time international service, and separately those with some international interest but who have not gone yet."

Malaria affects an estimated 300-600 million people a year around the world with around 2000 cases of malaria brought back to the US each year. This session will focus on the current treatment and symptom control of malaria around the world and in the US. Current research on prevention and vaccine development will also be discussed.

This session focuses on caring for the short-term mission worker - pre-travel matters to be addressed, encountered challenges during travel and common scenarios of the returning worker.
